As exhibit designer and general contractor, Cote Blanche Productions’ Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum in Houma, Louisiana, was given five stars —— their highest rating —— by Yahoo! Travel.
Swamps, bayous, marshes, and a vanishing coast: Terrebonne’s ecosystem is rich, diverse, and unlike most places in America and the world. Its people are inseparable from it—just like the redfish, otter, or great blue heron. We envisioned exhibits that broke down the borders between human history and natural history. We didn’t quite know what to call this concept, so we invented a word for it: Waterlife.
Everything else flowed from that. What to include and what not. How to combine high-tech interactive exhibits (67 different visitor-cued laser videos and/or audio programs) with low-tech ones: a brightly colored shrimp sorting game—aimed at kids—subtly raises both ecological issues (the problem of by-catch) and cultural diversity (the creatures in the net each bear their name in the three languages of the local fleet, English, Cajun French, and Vietnamese).
